Casual outfits. Is there anything we love more when we’re embarking on a new day than to slip into something casual? Probably not! Except for an outfit that is the ultimate outfit trifecta: Casual, Cute and Comfortable.
But, before we dive in, this is a very special post– meant to feature YOU! I’ve used a few outfit pictures of my own, but I wear business casual 95% of the time due to my day job. Most of my outfits end up looking business casual anyway! I just can’t help it. Given that, this post needs some variety and that’s where you come in.

Why do we love casual outfits?
First of all, why do we love casual outfits? Let me count the ways.
When we dress casually, it is usually the times where we have the most freedom to wear whatever we want. Not only is it the greatest opportunity for self-expression but, we also feel most like ourselves at these times. In addition, we can aim for comfort instead of worrying about adhering to a dress code.
What makes an outfit casual?
There is not one single element that can be identified as casual in most cases, rather it is the overarching feel of the whole outfit. Furthermore, a casual outfit can be a mix of pieces that are worn in other outfits for more formal occasions. One example is the blazer While a blazer in and of itself is more of a business formal item, it can be paired with jeans and a tee for a laid back look.
However, there are some elements that we can identify that are inherently casual, expressly, things like fabric, texture, certain types or styles of items. On the other hand, some items may not be casual, but the way we wear them is.
Fabric
Many fabrics have been designated as casual. Fabrics like denim, twill, corduroy are usually seen as casual.
They’ve been classified this way for different reasons. One reason may be because of the historic use of the fabric. Denim and some other twills have been seen as working-class fabrics because of the durability. Corduroy started out as a fabric used by royalty but by the 19th Century was seen as the “poor man’s velvet” as it had also been adopted by the working class.
While, it’s not an all encompassing rule, the rougher the texture, the more casual the fabric. Conversely, if a fabric is smooth and shiny, it’s more likely to be a dressier item.

Some items are casual in their nature. In fact, here are a few that I could think of just off hand.

- Jeans
- Shorts
- Tank tops

How to make a casual outfit look stylish
Most importantly, casual does not mean you look frumpy. There are many ways to make a casual outfit look stylish and put together. So many that I don’t think anyone could ever put together an exhaustive list, but here are a couple of tricks to have up your sleeve.
- Pay attention to proportions
- Don’t hide your figure
- Wear at least one accessory
- A third item, like a jacket or a cardigan, goes a long way
- Don’t forget your hair and face
- Wear colors that flatter your complexion and coordinate well with each other
