The Best Products for Organizing Your Closet

Did you know the average American Woman only wears 20% of her clothes 80% of the time? Wouldn’t you like to have 80% of the money that you’ve spent on clothes back? How about 80% more room in your overly crowded closet. Or, how would you like to actually wear all the clothes that you have instead of them just hanging in your closet unused? This post is dedicated to the closet organizers you can use to overcome unwornclothingitis.

Are you ready? Let’s dive in.

Why is organizing Your Closet Important?

Now, here’s the bottom line. When you’re rushed getting ready in the morning, if you can’t see it, you’ll probably forget you have it. It’s that simple.

Creating visibility and organization in your closet is one of the best ways to utilize what you already own.

The truth is, if things, like your clothing and jewelry, don’t have a designated spot, it creates discomfort and chaos in your life. Organizing your closet can take away this discomfort.

Why does your closet get so messy?

Simply stated, the reason your closet gets so messy is because of limited resources– limited time, and limited space and also, quite possibly, TOO MUCH STUFF.

If you’re still in a phase of cleaning out your closet, where you need to get rid of some things and downsize, you’ll really like my Clean Out Your Closet → Ease Your Mind post. It’s got all the tools you need to pair down and start a preliminary organization. You’ll also find how you can get The Ultimate Closet Cleaning Toolkit delivered straight to your inbox.

A few years ago, I used to have an overly stuffed cluttered closet. It was hard to find things and I had to spend too much time looking through everything to find the item that I wanted.

Now, I can walk into my closet and see all my “in season” items right in front of me. It’s made getting ready in the morning so much easier. I just pick out a top, bottom and maybe a layering piece and I’m out of there in a couple of minutes.

Ultimately, it’s because I don’t need to try on a million things to find an outfit that I like. I only keep the items that are versatile to go with many other things and I only keep the things that I really, really like AND because of the items that I’m going to share with you below. Everything that I need fits in my closet and I know exactly where everything is.

You don’t have a lot of time in the morning, getting yourself ready and the family out the door. I guarantee, if you spend a little time organizing your closet, it will actually cut minutes off your morning routine and help you leave the house in a more positive and confident manner.

Best Products to Organize Your Closet

In no particular order, here are the items that have helped me take my closet from overly crammed and disorganized to neat and tidy with everything in its place.

Cami Hangers

These cami hangers are my favorite. I have a lot of cotton tanks. They are kind of my obsession. I wear them under everything and sometimes even by themselves. It would take so much rod space to hang each of these individually. These are a huge space saver. You can hang 8 camis on each one.

Cami Hanger

*Now might be a good time to have a sidebar about my obsession with these tanks from Target. They are my absolute favorite. They come in several different colors, which vary from season to season, but they are great for layering.

Now, back to the cami hangers. You can find them in packs of two or 3. I use one for my tanks and one for my bras. My bras retain their shape much better hanging versus being crammed in a drawer.

Bag Hanger

One of the other big closet cramming pitfalls is what to do with all of your purses. Closets often lack a lot of shelving or the shelving is high and makes the items somewhat inaccessible. This bag hanger solves that problem. It hangs from your rod. There are these snap and velcro loops. The closure is very secure. Because of that, you don’t have to worry about them falling off.

Hanging Bag Organizer

You can hang several bags on each side. Furthermore, the purses also retain their shape better because they’re not folded over like they do when they sit on a flat surface.

Jewelry Organizer

Jewelry always posed the biggest obstacle for me. Before getting the hanging organizer that I could put in my closet, I had a jewelry box that sat on my dresser in my bedroom. The problem with that is, my husband was usually still asleep when I was in the part of my morning routine where I put on my jewelry. That meant I usually when without. By moving it to my closet, it makes it so much more convenient to wear. “Worn is not wasted”, I like to say.

I’m currently using this one, It has velcro loops for necklaces and clear pockets for earring, bracelets, etc. I really like to velcro loops on this one. Nothing like untangling necklaces in the morning to set you behind schedule, am I right?

Scarf Hanger

Make scarfs easy to find with this scarf hanger. It takes up the size of one hanger in your closet, and you can fit all of your scarves on it.

Drawer Dividers

Now, some helpful tips for your dresser. Check out these nifty little drawer dividers. They are great for small things like socks, underwear, bras or even t-shirts. They help make everything visible from the moment you open the drawer. No more digging around.

Shoe Holders

First, I have to say that I don’t actually have the shoe organizers, but they’ve been on my wishlist of a while. I haven’t actually bought them because I’ve downsized my wardrobe and I don’t actually need to create any more space These would be great for anyone with a smaller closet that still does need the extra room.

Fancy Wooden Hangers

Little by little, I’ve been replacing my wire and plastic hangers with these nice wooden ones. They create less stress at the shoulder seams and my clothing hangs better. Plus, I just like how upscale they look. It’s quite the aesthetic upgrade for not a lot of money. I can’t wait until they are all the same and I have uniform hangers throughout my entire closet.

Another great feature is the way the pant hangers work. Instead of folding the pants over a rod, they hang from the waistband. This helps pants retain their natural shape as well as their creases and pleats.

Common Questions/FAQ About Closet Organization

I hope you’ve checked out some of these nifty tools and found some things that can help you take your closet organization to the next level. If you still have more organizing to do and have more questions, I’ve answered some of the most Frequently Asked Questions about closet organization below.

How do I organize my bedroom closet?

Organizing your bedroom closet can be a very daunting task. Check out Clean Out Your Closet → Ease Your Mind for a foolproof, easy to follow, 5-step plan. You’ll want the Free Ultimate Closet Clean Out Toolkit to go with it. I promise, it will be the easiest, but most effective deep-closet clean out you’ve ever done.

How do I organize my closet by color?

This is one of my favorite things to do! First, you start with your whites or your version of white. Mine is off-white. I like to do all of my neutrals first. Some people prefer to do light neutrals, followed by medium neutrals, all the colors, with dark neutrals or black at the end.

However, I like to all my neutrals at the front from light to dark.

Next, you’ll do your colors, from light to dark in the order of the light spectrum, ROY G. BIV. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue (AKA cyan), indigo (AKA blue) and violet (AKA Purple). Then, within each color go from light to dark.  So for example, pink goes before red, light blue goes before navy. You get the picture.

You can include your prints by their most dominant color, or give them their own section altogether.

Because it’s a natural progression for your eyes anyway, it creates a very pleasing arrangement.

How do I maximize my closet space?

In short, you want to make every inch of space usable. Make sure vertical space is used appropriately. Many of the tools mentioned above can help you maximize your closet space.

  1. Use the cami hangers, a jewelry organizer or bag hanger to reduce the amount of space that is taken up on the rod.
  2. Add some plastic drawers that stand on their own if you have unused space under your hanging clothes.
  3. Put out-of-season items somewhere else.
  4. Remove keepsake items and store them separately.
  5. Use shoe stackers like the one above.

How can I organize my clothes without a closet?

If you do not have an actual closet, you can use a free-standing wardrobe or buy freestanding racks to store your clothes.

How can I put more clothes in my closet?

These space-saving hangers allow you to hang more per rod surface area. They do get pretty heavy, pretty fast, so organizer beware.
