Why, as a wardrobe consultant, am I doing a Stitch Fix Box review?

Do you get what you pay for with Stitch Fix? How would you know? I tell all, here in my Stitch Fix Box review.

They boast personal styling with a $20 fee that is applied toward anything you purchase from that box. As a wardrobe consultant, I can’t compete with that. I don’t get clothing at wholesale prices, so my fee would always be on top of anything you purchase. With that being said, where ever my readers go for styling services, I want to provide you with the information you need to make the best choice for yourself. Are you getting what you’re paying for?

What is a Stitch Fix box?

Stitch Fix is an online styling service. It’s kind of like a subscription box. They claim to deliver a truly personalized shopping experience. You order a box or a “fix” as they like to call it and you are sent 5 clothing and/or accessory items selected especially for you. Sign up for deliveries based on different time schedules, like every 2-3 weeks, monthly or even more sparse like every quarter or schedule them manually. You try everything on at home, keep what you love and send the rest back, but we’ll get into all the specifics later.

They now offer “Extras” which you can add to your shipment. “Extras” are essentials like socks, undergarments and other basics. Some of the extras that I’ve seen are bras and leggings or tights.

Why do people use styling services like Stitch Fix?

Stitch Fix is a great alternative to shopping for yourself if you’re short on time, hate shopping or are wanting to revamp your style. It’s also a very inexpensive alternative to hiring a personal stylist. Your styling fee goes toward anything you purchase. As long as you buy at least one thing, it’s worth it.

You can try things on in the comfort of your own home and one of my favorite things, you can also mix and match making more outfits with the clothes you already own.

How does Stitch Fix work?

Now, here’s how the process works.

Style Profile

First, sign up and take the style profile. They have a pretty in-depth questionnaire. It consists of questions about your size, fit preferences, outfit likes and dislikes, preferred price point and a section for some extra info.

Pick a Date

Then, you pick how often you want a fix. You can choose to schedule on demand or set up an automatic frequency. They have several options ranging from every 2-3 weeks to every 3 months. You’re charged a non-refundable $20 styling fee when your box is styled. That is applied as a credit toward anything you may decide to purchase from the box. Shipping is free both ways, even for exchanges.

Try on/Decide/Buy

Once your Stitch Fix box arrives, try everything on in the comfort of your own home. You have 3 days to try everything on. Try the items with different pieces from your closet to see how well the pieces coordinate with your existing wardrobe.

If you have trouble deciding what you should keep, I recommend using the clothing evaluation checklist portion of the Ultimate Closet Clean Out Toolkit.

Check out online to pay for the things you want to keep, then pack up what you don’t want into the prepaid envelope and mail it back hassle free.

What to do next with Stitch Fix

Leave Feedback

Finally, as part of the checkout process, I can’t fail to mention the feedback portion. This gives the stylist more information to help with your next fix. You have the option to return, exchange or keep each item followed by ratings for size, style, fit/cut, quality, price, and an additional comments section. I highly recommend filling this section out with great detail if you plan on getting another fix. The more information you can give your stylist, the better.

Tips for Success with Your Stitch Fix Box

There are several strategies you can use to get the most out of your Stitch Fix box. First, be sure to update your note to your stylist about what you’d like to have in your upcoming fix. Then, it’s also helpful if you can add a Pinterest board or Instagram profile to your account so that your stylist can see the things that you like. Now, they also have a fun little activity called the Style Shuffle. They show you outfits and you give a thumbs up or thumbs down. They use an algorithm to help hone in on your style preferences. Their blog says that people who use Style Shuffle are usually more satisfied with the selection in their box. What have you got to lose?

Common Questions/FAQ About Stitch Fix

How much does the average stitch fix box cost?

The prices of each item range from $25-$500. If you keep everything in your box, you get a 25% discount. There are 5 items in the box giving a range of $125-$2,500 per box pre-discount. The price of the pieces in your box will be determined by your preferences in your style profile.

Does stitch fix really have stylists?

Yes and no. There is a person that decides what to put in your shipment, however, if you look at the job listings on their website, they have a slew of programming and analytics positions. All that data that you input in your style profile and the style shuffle have to be analyzed somehow. This is just a guess, but my bet is that a program recommends sizes and styles to your stylist, who then selects from the recommended pieces something that they think you’ll love.

How do Stitch Fix prices relate to other retail prices?

I’m not going off of a lot of data here, but I believe they are very comparable. A majority of the items I received in my box were Stitch Fix exclusives, so I was unable to do a cost comparison. Below, you can see a detailed analysis of the price of each item.

Does stitch fix price match?

Yes. If you find an identical item at another online retailer within 7 days of your delivery, they’ll match the price.

How does stitch fix make money?

There’s the styling fee, which most likely covers the shipping cost. Stitch Fix is really just an online retailer, so just like every other retailer you know, they make their money from markup. They buy the clothing at wholesale prices, then sell it to you at retail or retail minus the 25% discount. Standard markup is between 2.2 and 2.5. For example, if they buy a blouse for $20 from a wholesaler, then, they sell it for anywhere from $44 to $50.

Can you exchange Stitch Fix sizes?

Yes, Stitch Fix offers exchanges for different sizes of things that are in your shipment or for replacement of damaged items.

As a side note, they do not offer exchanges for items of a different color, different styles or items or Extras.

What sizes do they offer?

Stitch Fix offers merchandise not only for women but men and children too. Women’s sizes range from 0-24W (XS-3X) in petite, plus and maternity sizes. Men’s sizes range from 28” to 48” waist, 28” to 36” inseam and XS-3X. Kids’ sizes start at 2T and go through 14.

Can you cancel stitch fix at any time?

You can cancel a shipment until approximately two weeks prior to the day your shipment is scheduled to arrive. If it’s within two weeks of your delivery date, you’ll need to contact Stitch Fix directly to stop your shipment if possible.

Alternatively, you can also skip deliveries, change the frequency in which you receive them, or switch to automatic to manual deliveries.

Question not answered here?

You can find info on all of the questions answered here as well as any other question you may have that I didn’t touch on at Stitch Fix’s FAQ page.

I want to share my profile with you, so you can see for yourself how the items in my fix align with the answers in my profile.

I like my clothes fitted. Sometimes I’ll flaunt my arms, back, rear and legs. My shoulders and cleavage I only flaunt for special occasions. I love styles that accentuate my waist so I check I love form-fitting styles for my midsection.

Classic and statement jewelry with gold tones, please.

I want to avoid black, orange and plaid in my shipment.

For price, I selected “the cheaper the better” on all categories. The other categories to choose from are $50-$100, $100-$150, $150-$200, and $200+.

Stitch Fix Box #1

In the section to leave a special note for my stylist, I put the following:

“I prefer skirts/dresses for the office to be no shorter than 2″ above the knee. I’m a deep autumn– dark brown hair and brown eyes.  I don’t wear black I would consider myself a classy bombshell type style. A hint of vintage is my thing and I love to bring it in with vintage looking accessories.  I like to accentuate my waist. I have a somewhat small diamond-shaped head/face.”

BAY TO BAUBLES | Covington Statement Necklace

The Covington Statement Necklace was my favorite piece out of this box. The leaflike designs give a sort of art deco flare.

Bay to Baubles Covington Statement Necklace

MIX BY 41 HAWTHORN | Arnold Raglan Knit Top

The arnold Raglan Knit Top is so much cuter in person than it appears in pictures. It would also work well with a Preppy or Mod style.

mix by 41 Hawthorn Arnold Raglan Knit Top

FUN2FUN | Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse

The fabric on the Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse is delicate– the perfect summer-weight blouse. I just love the dainty polka dots.

FUN2FUN Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse

LEOTA | Tabitha Skirt

I would have liked if the Tabitha Skirt fit a little higher on the waist, but it still fits really cute. I love that it’s white with a navy circle pattern. It’s a nifty contrast with the pattern of the blouse. The print of this skirt can be paired with solids as well as many other types of prints such as stripes, florals, etc.

Leota Tabitha Skirt

WISP | Ceena Jersey Dress

The Ceena Jersey Dress is a very flattering cut. The stretchiness makes it just that much more comfortable. It’s a great dress for brunch, a shower or even a day-time wedding.

Arnold Raglan Knit Top and Leota Tabitha Skirt

Here I have on the Bay to Baubles Covington Statement Necklace, the Mix by 41 hawthorn Arnold Ragland Knit Top with the Leota Tabitha Skirt

Arnold Raglan Knit Top with navy slim ankle pants

I paired the necklace and raglan top with some navy slim ankle pants from my closet. I really like how the yellow pops against the navy.

Fun2Fun Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse with Leota Tabitha Skirt

The mix of dots with these two pieces is to die for! The small dainty dot on top mixed with the larger circular pattern on the bottom has a nice aesthetic. I think the pattern on the skirt is actually black, but the stitching is so small, it can pass for navy. I thought it was navy for a couple of days. 🙂

Wisp Ceena Jersey Dress

The dress is cute. The pink and lime green in the pattern are more suited for Winters than Autumns. I like the cut and the fit. It’s the perfect length for me.

Fit

Everything fit perfectly. I’m glad I put the size medium on my style profile. Smalls may have worked, but I didn’t feel like the mediums were too big. I’m of pretty average proportions, so fit is not usually an issue.

Price

On my profile, I selected “the cheaper the better” on every category, so I assumed all of my items would be less than $50. Well, when I got my package, 2 of 5 were more than $50. I’m a pretty frugal person especially when it comes to clothes. I’ll only pay $68 for something that’s really special. I’ve even had custom made-to-measure jeans for less. But overall, the prices were not bad and mostly stayed within my desired range.

Comparison

I really wanted to do a price comparison on the items, but I’ve not had any luck finding any of the items anywhere else.

Bay to Baubles is owned by Stitch Fix; you won’t find it anywhere else.

Mix by 41 Hawthorn is another Stitch Fix exclusive brand.

I had a hard time finding Fun 2 Fun. It looks like it may have been carried by ModCloth at one time, but there were no current listings. However, $38 is a price consistent with the current selection of ModCloth, so I’d say Stitch Fix’s prices are on point with the competition.

Leota can be found at retailers like Nordstrom. However, I was only able to find dresses and jumpsuits at other retailers. The skirt collection is exclusive for Stitch Fix. The price is comparable to other brands you would find at Nordstrom’s, however, I was surprised by the quality of the skirt in relation to the price and the retailers that the brand is associated with. Prices on Leota’s own website are up a notch with prices ranging from $98 to $168.

The dress makes it 0 for 5 on price comparisons. I could only find listings for WISP dresses on Poshmark, eBay and ThredUP all indicating that they were purchased from Stitch Fix, so this may just be another brand exclusive.

Stitch Fix’s exclusive brands

Quality

When it comes to clothing, it would be nice if you actually get what you paid for, but unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Just because you pay more money for something, does not make it better quality. Sometimes even the cheapest made brands charge an arm and a leg. When I took a sewn product quality analysis class in college, our professor talked about the brand that had the very cheapest workmanship and sewing techniques and you know what? It’s not Wal-mart or Old Navy. It’s Abercrombie and Fitch! Try that on for size!

Covington Statement necklace closeup

BAY TO BAUBLES | Covington Statement Necklace

I have to say, I know the least about jewelry quality indicators than I do about clothing. The necklace had a nice weight to it, all the stones were mounted straight. I think this is a good quality for the price.

MIX BY 41 HAWTHORN | Arnold Raglan Knit Top

This shirt surprised me the most. It’s listed as a “knit” top. It’s more of a light-weight sweater than a tee shirt. This had the most high-quality indicators of all the clothing items.

Many of the seams were completed in a 2 step process. The side seams and shoulder seams were stitched, then the seam moved to one side, then a flatlock stitch was made over the seam. On cheaper items, the sewer will skip the first step, just butt the folded edges of the fabric together and use a flatlock stitch.

Another indicator of high quality is the matching of the pattern. The stripes on the side seams match up perfectly. The print is also matched at the back shoulder seams, but not at the front. Because of the shape of the raglan sleeve, it’s impossible for all of the seams to match up. If I were making the shirt, I would match the stripes on the front sleeve instead of the back sleeve, but considering the price of only $38, it’s still a super bonus that any of the stripes match. This top gets an A+ on quality.

FUN2FUN | Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse

The navy blouse was free from defects. The pattern doesn’t match up, but it’s really hard and not as necessary with such a small print. Some of the stitch lines on the trim around the neck were not really straight, but if you really inspect your clothing closely, you’ll find that very few of them are. The split hem at the side seams shows that the side seam allowances were serged before the seam was stitched. There is a very clean transition from the serged edges to the folded split at the bottom.

Stitch Fix Box Review | Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse split hem

UPDATE: I just found this same top in different colors and patterns (this one is the cheapest, but only has it in a floral pattern) on Amazon and they’re much cheaper. Even though I already have two of them, I almost want to order one of these just to compare quality.

LEOTA | Tabitha Skirt

The skirt was made of thicker, nice quality fabric. It was opaque, so no slip needed. The seam types were typical for that type of fabric. I was very disappointed that the print was so mismatched. This skirt has a smallish regular print that would be very easy to match especially with the straight hem. Being one of the higher priced items in my box, it didn’t actually appear to be of better quality. The Hawthorn knit top was by far better quality. . . and cheaper too. This is a perfect example of why a higher price does not actually mean better quality. It is super cute though, right?

WISP | Ceena Jersey Dress

The dress is knit and has the typical seams used for knit garments. The top is lined which creates much more attractive edges, than when a turn and stitch method is used. My only complaints about the quality of the dress are: 1) The waist seam on either side of the zipper didn’t match up. 2) Part of the invisible zipper was actually visible. It’s harder to get a perfect zipper when you have the extra layer of the lining. 3) Mismatched print. It’s a lot less noticeable with a large irregular print like this and a lot harder to do.

Stitch Fix Box Review | Wisp Dress Uneven waist seam

Style

I’ve got to be honest. I may not have gone into this experiment with an open mind because I love shopping and am very picky about my clothes. I have to say, I was really impressed that someone else was able to pick out items for me that fit my style and all my weird quirks/preferences.

Either my stylist actually spent some time looking at my Pinterest board or she just got really lucky. All the colors that she chose for me with the exception of the print on the dress are perfect for a Deep Autumn such as myself. She styled the selections around navy which is my dark neutral color.

I don’t normally do horizontal stripes, and I’m not really a yellow person, but I have to admit, that top looked cute on me and really stunning with my navy ankle slim legged pants. The stripes on the top and the circular pattern on the skirt are a fun print combo.

I absolutely love the skirt and the navy dotted blouse.

My very favorite item is the necklace. I think it’s just one of those items that has just been missing from my wardrobe this whole time. A really special statement piece.

So, here’s to Meg, my Stitch Fix stylist! She did a great job!

Stitch Fix Box #2

In the section to leave a special note for my stylist, I put the following:

In this fix I would like some layering pieces like a cardigan and/or blazer. I’m good on jeans, so don’t include any in this shipment. If possible, I would like to have my same stylist again.

Stitch Fix Box Review

MIX BY 41 HAWTHORN | Abrianna Longsleeve Knit Cardigan

I like the color of this cardigan, but I thought the style was somewhat bland. There is no shape to it. It’s kind of droopy. A lot of people like this type of style and there is a lot of it out on the market. The open front creates great vertical lines for someone who wants to elongate their torso and slim their tummy. But, nonetheless, this style just wasn’t for me.

MIX BY 41 HAWTHORN | Abrianna Longsleeve Knit Cardigan

ROSEMUNDE | Jette Ponte Blazer

This is a gorgeous blazer. While the color is listed as dark grey, I’d say it has a greenish hue to it. It’s a very traditional structured blazer cut, but it’s made out of ponte knit, so it has structure and comfort.

ROSEMUNDE | Jette Ponte Blazer

FORTUNE + IVY | Irene Faux Wrap Brushed Knit Maxi Dress

This dress is not only beautiful, but the fabric is incredibly soft and comfortable as well. The flutter sleeve and flare of the skirt give it a retro vibe.

I don’t think the name of the dress is very accurate. They have it listed as a maxi dress, but I am pretty much your average height and this dress hit me just below the knee.

FORTUNE + IVY | Irene Faux Wrap Brushed Knit Maxi Dress

FUN2FUN | Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse

This is a very cute top. The tulip sleeves are very flattering. However, with the exception of the fabric/print, this is the exact same top as they sent me in my first Stitch Fix box.

FUN2FUN | Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse

FRENCHMAUVE | Melanie Knit Tunic Blazer

This blazer is not really my style. I much prefer the structured style of the knit blazer. The design of the pockets on this one had quite an ill effect on the appearance of my hips.

FRENCHMAUVE | Melanie Knit Tunic Blazer

Outfits

Fit

Once again, everything fit perfectly. Not surprising, since knits made a 4 to 1 appearance.

Price

Bargain hunter here; I assumed all of my items would be less than $50. Only two items were within that range: the mustard cardigan and the tulip sleeve blouse with the dress was pretty close to the $50 mark. The two blazers were $88 and $98. I understand that because of the construction of a typical blazer, they are usually more expensive, however, I’ll touch more on this later.

I know I’m pretty picky and cheap, but my monthly clothes budget just can’t quite stretch to the grand total of $237 (which is with a 25% discount).

Comparisons

For the purpose of price comparison, here’s what I’ve found out about the styles, brands and comperable prices.

As I mentioned above, Mix by 41 Hawthorn is a Stitch Fix brand, so you won’t find them anywhere else. The Abrianna longsleeve knit cardigan I got in this Stitch Fix comes in at $38 just like the mix by Hawthorn knit top in my previous Stitch Fix. It seems that the pricing is consistent.

The Rosemunde – Jette Ponte Blazer has a list price of $98. I found almost the exact blazer (different color lining) for quite a bit more money. Stitch Fix is giving you a steal on this one! Especially if you get all 5 items and get 25% off.

Now, for the Fortune + Ivy – Irene faux wrap brushed knit maxi dress, I didn’t find this exact color/pattern, but I did find it in another color/pattern at Belk for $78. Consider this one a steal as well.

The Fun2Fun – Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse is $38 just as it was in my previous box.

UPDATE: I just found this same top in different colors and patterns (this one is the cheapest, but only has it in a floral pattern) on Amazon and they’re much cheaper. Even though I already have two of them, I almost want to order one of these just to compare quality.

This brings me to the Frenchmauve – Melanie knit tunic blazer. I found it for $99. While, Stitch Fix is giving you a slightly better price, than you can get elsewhere, I really wouldn’t call this a bargain. You’ll just have to continue to the quality section to find out more.

stitch fix box review

Quality

As I mentioned before, in a perfect world, price should be an indicator of quality. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Many times, we can find cheaper things that high quality and expensive things that are a waste of your hard earned money.

MIX BY 41 HAWTHORN | Abrianna Longsleeve Knit Cardigan

The Mix by 41 Hawthorn brand continues to be a great quality at a low price.

It is constructed with a 4-thread overlock stitch. Cheaper garments are sewn with a 3-thread overlock, but using a 5-thread stitch would be overkill and too bulky for this fabric.

The back neck seam has a binding. Lower quality garments would just have an exposed seam here like the rest of the inside of the garment.

The garment is hemmed perfectly. The raw edge of the fabric is concealed by the coverstitch.

ROSEMUNDE | Jette Ponte Blazer

This blazer has real pockets, not just faux flaps. The pocket is basted closed to retain its shape before it is purchased. The pocket flap is also backed with lining instead of the shell fabric to reduce bulk.

The entire jacket is lined, including the sleeves. The lining is cut from several different sections to help the jacket retain the correct structured shape.

The construction around the vent is flawless.

I can’t see the inner construction of the jacket, but it has a good structure and shape, so I’d bet the inner workings of this blazer are just as high quality as the visible ones. Everything I can tell about this jacket says it has excellent quality.

FORTUNE + IVY | Irene Faux Wrap Brushed Knit Maxi Dress

Unfortunately, the Irene Faux Wrap Brushed Knit Maxi Dress is kind of a mixed review. Several of the construction techniques are good quality, while one of them is rather poorly executed.

The fabric is a high quality, opaque and soft.

The seams use a 4-thread overlock stitch. This is the perfect stitch for this kind of fabric.

The seams have a clear seam stabilization tape to prevent stretching and distortion.

It has hanger ribbons to help the garment stay on the hanger.

Instead of the front neckline just being turned and stitched as a hem would be, it actually has a binding. the binding will help the garment lay flat and prevent stretching with wear.

However, the most disappointing detail about this dress is the hem. It’s very poorly executed. The cut edge should not be exposed. I should be underneath the cover stitch. If you want to see what the correct hem should look like, check out one of the Mix by 41 Hawthorn items above. What’s so extremely disappointing about this shotty hem is that it is SO VISIBLE with this type of hi-lo hemline.

FUN2FUN | Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse

This top is constructed exactly like the the Callum Tulip Sleeve Blouse in my previous box. The only difference is the texture and opaqueness of the fabric.

The hem is stitched perfectly and the finishing around the neck and keyhole back are superb.

You couldn’t ask for better quality especially for this price.

FRENCHMAUVE | Melanie Knit Tunic Blazer

Now, here’s where I see a huge disconnect. While this jacket has some markers of quality like ths stitch type, the understitching on the hem and hem stabilizer tape at the shoulders, they really miss the mark on the sleeve cuff. They actually have a raw edge on the outside of the garment. I guess normally, you’d have the cuff rolled up and it would not be visible, but a high-quality garment would have the option of rolling it up or leaving it down. In my book, having the cuff seam on the outside is unacceptable and lazy, especially for the price. If I was getting this for $12 at TJ MAXX, I would expect it!

Style

In this box, I feel like the styling is at about 50%. I loved the top, dress and the structured blazer; however, I wasn’t crazy about having the exact same top as before. It makes me wonder if they have a very big selection or maybe I’m just that picky. The cardigan and the knit tunic blazer are not my style. I imagine it’s pretty difficult to pick clothes out for someone that you’ve never met just based on a few questions and a pinterest board that I don’t keep up with very well.

Stitch Fix Box Review

The Pros and Cons of Stitch Fix

Pros

  1. Price- I don’t think you can beat the $20 styling fee purchase credit. You sure can’t hire a personal stylist for that much.
  2. Quick Delivery- From the time I scheduled my fix to the time my box arrived was a week. That’s pretty good timing for items selection and shipping.
  3. Try on in-home- This is a big plus. Not only can you take advantage of the good lighting in your own home, but you can try out the items with other things in your closet to get an idea of how well it mixes and matches with your current wardrobe.
  4. Variety of shipment frequencies – You can choose manual fixes or automatic fixes. Delivery times for automatic fixes are every 2-3 weeks, monthly, every other month or every three months. You can also skip or reschedule your fix as long as it has not been styled yet.

Cons

  1. No pre-send preview-  You don’t get a preview of what they are sending you. I’d like to get to veto anything before they send it. There might be something in the box that I know I won’t like. It would give my stylist the opportunity to have some feedback and increase the chances that I’m happy with my box and want to do it again.
  2. Style categories- There are only 7 style categories. I feel like there is some room for improvement here. Some styles are missing, or they have two or more squished into one.
  3. Can’t exchange colors- I think it stinks that if you like something, but not the color, you can’t exchange it. I don’t know how you would know what colors might be available, but color is a very specific style element and one that people have the most opinions about. It can make or break an outfit.
  4. Decreased purchase resistance- When doing price comparison research for the items in my box, I found a lot of the items for sale at online consignment stores like Poshmark, ThredUP, eBay, etc., many of them with tags still on. Is the fact that the person has the clothing in their home and it’s more difficult to send it back than it is to just keep it. Why are so many people not making good purchase decisions and buying something that they then never wear? I guess it’s smart if you’re a retailer, but bad if you want to be mindful of your spending. Or is it that you’ve already “spent” $20 bucks on the styling fee, so you feel like you have to buy something to get your money’s worth.
My Stitch Fix Box Review: Pros vs Cons

The Final Thoughts of my Expert Stitch Fix Box Review

I would love to be able to style each one of you that reads this post, myself, but I’m not going to do it for $20. Since I can’t, I think Stitch Fix is a good option and I want you to be able to get the most out of it. Tell me what you think about my fix in the comments at the bottom of the page or leave a note about your experience with Stitch Fix. Do you think I should schedule another shipment for myself? It was kind of fun to be on the other end of things for once even though I don’t usually like surprises.

Finally, if you’d like to try Stitch Fix, use my referral code. We’ll both get a $25 credit, which you can use toward your styling fee. You are basically trying it out risk-free.
