So, who here has spent a ridiculous amount of time trying on different sunglasses at the store or frames at the eye Dr’s office? If anyone was here as I am writing this, you’d see my hand raised. I admit I (at least once or twice) have spent way too long trying on eyewear. Usually, it is between 2-3 different styles and I can’t decide which ones I like the best. While knowing your face shape can’t weed out all the options, it can reduce them significantly and make finding the best sunglasses for your face shape so much easier.
If you haven’t read it recently, take a minute to read my previous post about face shapes. You may think you know your face shape (like I did), only to find out it is actually something different. There are now 4 new face shape categorizations in addition to the 5 that had previously been defined. Sign up to get access to my face shape quiz below.
Just as with any other clothing item or accessory, the name of the game is balance. Whether you’re looking for the best sunglasses for a small face or spectacles for a round face, the principles are the same. You can soften the effects of your face shape by using a contrasting shape as a counter, creating a focal point with the same weight or dominance as another facial feature.
The Best Glasses For Kite/Diamond Face Shape
The diamond shaped face’s widest point is the cheekbones. You’ll want to try on any glasses you are considering purchasing and avoid any that are so large that the sit on and make indentations in the cheeks. This will put stress on the skin under the eye by pulling it down. You should also look for frames that are not significantly wider than the cheekbones. You have a few different options you can go with. Look for styles that have a strong line at the brow like cat-eye frames, wayfarer or horn-rimmed glasses. You can also go with styles that have shapes that are opposite of your features. If your face has angular lines go with ovals. You can also go with rectangular shaped frames if they offset the contours of your face. Rimless or semi-rimless styles work for you too.

The Best Glasses For Heart Face Shape
The heart shaped face needs glasses that look proportional to the forehead but do not bring extra emphasis with broad lines at the brow. You should avoid Cat-eye and horn-rimmed frames. Instead, go for oval shapes that soften the facial features. Another good style for the heart-shaped face is the wayfarer. Wayfarer glasses are one instance where the shape of the frame slightly mimics the shape of the face being wider at the top than they are at the bottom. Rimless and semi-rimless styles are good because although they are taller in height, they do not visually cut the length of the face because of their transparent nature. You can also wear a rectangular frame that brings contrast to you curves of the face but be sure to stick with thinner, frames that do not have a high contrast with your skin to avoid overemphasizing the width of the upper portion of your face.
The Best Glasses For Rectangle Face Shape
Rectangle faces are longer than they are wide. The forehead, cheeks, and jaw are about the same width. Since a rectangle face has angular lines, curved lines should be used in glass frames or sunglasses to soften the facial features. Look for oval, round, wayfarer style frames or other styles that have emphasis at the brow line. You can also wear glasses that are overall larger as they will proportional to the length of your face.
The Best Glasses For Oval Face Shape
By many, the oval face shape is considered to be the most versatile. Those with oval-shaped faces can wear rectangle, square, round and oval shapes. Although curved line glasses can be worn, I would still avoid oval shapes that are exactly the same shape as your face only rotated 90 degrees. I believe that this creates too much of a focal point of one shape and creates an imbalance. Eyewear styles for the oval face are the aviator, wayfarer, cat-eye, and rectangle.
The Best Glasses For Round Face Shape
With a round face, you should avoid small round frames. Instead, choose square or rectangle frames for your glasses and sunglasses. You can also choose styles that have a combination of straight and curvy lines. The Wayfarer is a good style for you. Another element that you should pay special attention to is the height of the glasses. Since your face is on the short side, stick with frames that are shorter in height so they won’t overpower your face.
The Best Glasses For Square Face Shape
Square faces are very similar to the rectangle face in that the forehead, cheekbones, and jaw are the same width, but for the square face, the length is shorter. The best sunglasses or eyewear shapes for the square face are the oval, round, wayfarer frames and other frames that have an emphasis at the browline. Look for spectacles that are not as tall covering up too much of the face and making it look shorter.
The Best Glasses For Teardrop/Triangle/Pear Face Shape
Teardrop faces should avoid eyeglass shapes that repeat the shape of the jawline. Balance out the jaw by wearing narrow rectangular shaped frames, wayfarers or other eyewear styles with an emphasis at the brow line like horn-rimmed or cat-eye.
The Best Glasses For Heptagon Face Shape
If you have a heptagon face shape, the area from the forehead and cheekbones is the widest. Wear large sunglasses that are proportional to the widest part of the face. Avoid extreme shapes, like glasses that are perfect circles or square and rectangle glasses with sharp points. Instead, look for angular shapes with rounded edges to bring balance to your facial features. Spectacles with an emphasis at the brow-line like wayfarer, cat-eye and horn-rimmed styles are also good options. Avoid clear and rimless styles and look for eyewear that has a substantial presence.
The Best Glasses For Oblong Face Shape
For an oblong face, choose oversized eyewear. You want the size to be in proportion to your face length. Large scale rectangle and square shapes work well. Curvy shapes like those on the aviator and wayfarer will compliment your face shape as well. Avoid small oval and round shapes or clear and rimless styles. This face shape needs substantial eyewear.
Wayfarer style sunglasses are universally flattering on all face shapes. No only that, but they are a classic style that has remained popular over the years and a great, stylish option for any wardrobe. Consider these a solid investment to withstand the current fashion fads and trends.
