Because color is such a visual thing, I can talk about color until I’m blue in the face, but until you actually see it demonstrated, it’s hard to visualize and wrap your brain around it. I’ve compiled some examples of garments of the various season’s colors. These are just examples to show you the differences in the absolute seasons’
Spring
Neutrals
For Springs neutral colors, I chose to show you two pieces. The first being a wide cut leg, gorgeous pair of wool blend slacks in a spring brown. The next is a cream colored layered chiffon blouse.
Red
The red of this v-neck, wrap dress is perfect for Springs. It is an intense color with a yellow undertone. The color makes this piece sizzling enough for date night, but the style makes it conservative enough for the office or church as well. A piece like this would be a versatile addition to any wardrobe.
Orange
This orange sweater is a perfect transitional piece for this time of year. It can still be cold outside, especially in the mornings, but this bright orange is the perfect embodiment of the warmth and cheerfulness of spring and remind us that warmer weather is on the horizon.
Yellow
Bring the sunshine indoors with this golden yellow t-shirt. This is a perfect example of a yellow from the double primary color wheel in which a little bit of red has been added to the color to warm it up. (If you missed that post, go back and review my post on the double primary color wheel.)
Green
This v-neck, bright green blouse has a yellow undertone which makes it a perfect Spring color and would be another versatile piece for a Spring to add to her wardrobe. Wear it with some slacks for work or skinny jeans or shorts for a more casual ensemble.
Blue
Blue-Take a look at this super cute asymmetric off-the-shoulder tee: simple, clean, fun and bright. It would also be ideal for a triangle body shape to draw attention up….( but we’ll get to body types later).
Purple
For purple fabrics, look for ones with a slight red leaning or undertone as opposed to one with a blue leaning. Again, we’re looking for a warm undertone… and wouldn’t this top look great with some cute capris.
Summer
Neutrals
For Summer’s neutral colors, I found these super cute gray-toned jeans and a white tee. I love the t-shirts with the tie like gathering. They’re kind of my favorite thing right now.
Red
Summer’s red has a blue undertone and is less vibrant than the cool red of Winter and this tee is a perfect example of a gentle red that is perfect for the delicate coloring of a Summer.
Orange
Orange sherbet anyone? Everything about this orange seersucker skirt is perfect from the soft draping tie to the sweet drop of color.
Yellow
This Summer yellow of this v-neck camesole could also be likened to a certain sherbet at your favorite ice cream parlor. It has a sweet and light feel.
Green
I am in LOVE with this dusky green dress. If I were
Blue
I have a love for blazers in general. This one is light and crisp. It will dress up any outfit by just throwing it on.
Purple
This purple embroidered cotton wrap blouse could also become a wardrobe staple for a Summer. D
One of the great things about Summer’s colors is that they are tints. They are so light that they sometimes read as neutrals so you can wear more colors at once.
Autumn
Neutrals
The Autumn neutrals I have chosen to show you are a beige top. You could also wear the cream top in Spring’s collection. The dark khaki green of
Red
This orange-red tee has a cut criss-cross detail with a v-neckline. A cute upgrade the classic tee. It would really pop worn with the dark khaki green pants.
Orange
I just love the simple but interesting take on the tee. This orange is a perfect Autumn color for spring and summer weather.
Yellow
The golden yellow for Autumn is a little more golden and a little less yellow than the golden yellow of Spring. It has more of an earthy feel.
Green
Autumn green contains a slight yellow undertone. This particular green is Autumns Forest Green. This lantern-sleeve dress with the rich texture of the lace sleeves is perfect for an autumn.
Blue
This tee is a perfect example of the kind of smokey blue that works so well for Autumns and it’s in my favorite wrap over style, too. It is more muted than the Spring blue.
Purple
Autumn’s purple comes from the double primary color wheel. (If you missed the post about the double primary color wheel, you can view it here) Everyone is loving cold-shoulder tops these days.
Winter
Neutrals
Winter’s colors are pure primary and secondary colors. Winter’s have the most contrast and this is reflected in the colors that they wear. For neutrals, I have chosen to show you black and white. Winters are the only season that can wear black and stark white well. I’m a sucker for high waisted pants, I’ve been waiting for them to come back in style since 2007. I would have worn them anyway, but I couldn’t find them in stores. I think these black and white striped pants are just stunning, I wish they had them in Autumn colors so that I could buy them. The black v-neck camisole would be super cute with these pants.
Red
The primary red of this tee paired with the stripes
Orange/Brown
Winter’s really don’t pull off orange. In their color palette, orange is replaced by a low saturation orange, otherwise known as brown. Check out this brown keyhole top (if you’re not sure what the term saturation means, check out my earlier post.)
Yellow
Primary yellow is a good color for winters. It makes a great accent color too if you want to add a pop to a monochromatic color scheme. This is another great transition piece for when the mood is warm, but the weather just hasn’t caught up yet.
Green
Dark, but delicate. . . This green dress is a perfect example of a deep green color for winters, but the short cut and the delicate lace give it a “not-so-serious” vibe.
Blue
Before I knew about seasonal color analysis, this was my favorite blue (I probably dressed as a winter more than 50% of the time before I understood the nuances of color). I love the intensity of it. Just imagine, this top with the piercing deep blue eyes of a winter. It would really make the eyes pop.
Purple
This plum top is a perfect example of a deeper shade of purple that Winters wear so well.
