White pants are one of those wardrobe pieces that look fabulous on other people, but you may wonder whether you can actually pull them off yourself. Are they too dressy? Are they only for summer? What in the world are you supposed to wear with them?

First of all, white pants are much more versatile than you may think. You can dress them up, dress them down and wear them with almost every color in your closet.

However, because I am a Deep Autumn, I usually choose cream pants instead of bright white. Optic white can look a little harsh next to my warm, deep coloring. Cream gives me the same fresh, light look, but its warmth coordinates much better with the earthy colors in my wardrobe.

For this post, I styled the same pair of cream pants 25 different ways. Some of the tops are available in my online boutique, while others are pieces you can find through the Amazon links provided.

Are you ready to see just how hard these pants can work?

Let’s get started!

Why Are Cream Pants So Versatile?

Cream functions as a light neutral. That means it coordinates with your statement colors, other neutrals, prints and even other shades of cream.

Unlike bright white, cream does not create as much contrast when it is worn with camel, brown, olive, rust or other warm colors. However, it still lightens the outfit and gives it that fresh quality we love about white pants.

The pants themselves also have a classic, straight silhouette without a lot of fussy details. Because of this, the tops, shoes and accessories get to determine whether each outfit feels casual, polished, romantic, sporty or business casual.

1. Add a Rust Open-Knit Sweater

For starters, cream and rust may be one of my favorite color combinations. Rust provides the richness that a Deep Autumn needs, while the cream pants keep the outfit from looking too dark or heavy.

The open-knit texture also makes the sweater feel lighter, so you can enjoy the richness of a fall color during warmer or transitional weather. Flat sandals finish the outfit with a relaxed, everyday feel.

2. Pair Them With a Chambray Blouse

Blue and cream create a classic combination, but this softer, slightly muted blue is much more harmonious with a warm wardrobe than a bright icy blue. I got this top through Stitch Fix. Get $25 off your first Fix.

Tucking in the blouse and adding a brown belt gives the outfit structure and waist definition. The tan shoes repeat the warmth of the belt and create a polished look that would work beautifully for the office.

3. Try a Sleeveless Rust Sweater

Here is another rust-and-cream combination, but this one has an entirely different feel. The sleeveless knit top is simple and streamlined, making the outfit feel polished without being overly dressy.

The texture of the knit keeps a solid-colored top from becoming boring. Add sandals for a warm-weather outfit, or layer a jacket over it when the temperature drops.

4. Create a Soft Monochromatic Outfit

You do not have to wear a contrasting color with cream pants. Pairing them with a light cream textured top creates a soft monochromatic outfit that looks clean and put together.

The different textures prevent the two light-colored pieces from blending into one flat block of color. White or cream sneakers keep the outfit casual and comfortable.

5. Add a Charcoal T-Shirt

Charcoal is one of my favorite alternatives to black. It still gives you depth and contrast, but it is softer and easier to wear with a warm color palette.

A basic V-neck T-shirt and casual sneakers make the cream pants feel just as easy to wear as jeans. This is the kind of outfit you can throw on for errands, school activities or a casual lunch.

6. Dress Them Up With a Short-Sleeved Sweater

A fitted, short-sleeved sweater gives the pants a dressier appearance without sacrificing comfort. The deep burgundy-rust color adds richness and keeps the light pants grounded.

Because both pieces have clean, classic lines, you could change the shoes and completely change the purpose of the outfit. Sandals make it casual, while loafers or heels would make it office-ready.

7. Wear Cream Pants With Camouflage

Who says cream pants have to look dressy? A camouflage T-shirt and casual slip-on shoes immediately give them a sporty, laid-back feel.

The cream in the pants also picks up the lightest shades in the camouflage print. This creates coordination without requiring the colors to match exactly.

8. Add a Relaxed Striped Top

The relaxed silhouette of this gray-and-cream striped top contrasts nicely with the cleaner shape of the pants. A small front tuck keeps the loose top from hiding the waist completely.

The belt adds definition and helps the outfit feel intentional. Finished with navy pumps, this would be an easy business-casual or teacher outfit.

9. Pair Them With a Deep Floral Blouse

A dark floral blouse is a great way to transition cream pants into fall. The deeper background and rich floral colors give the outfit visual weight, while the pants keep it from becoming too dark.

The flutter sleeves add a soft, feminine element. Pairing the outfit with sandals keeps it warm-weather appropriate, but ankle boots would work later in the season.

10. Have Fun With a Bright Leopard Print

Leopard print does not always have to be brown and tan. This coral leopard-print top adds personality and a fun pop of color to the neutral pants.

Because the pants are simple, they allow the print to be the focus of the outfit. This is one of the greatest advantages of owning a versatile neutral bottom—you can wear all those fun tops without wondering what to put with them.

11. Add a Floral Peplum Top

This bright floral peplum blouse instantly dresses up the cream pants. The fitted waist and flared peplum create shape, while the pants provide a clean foundation underneath it.

The dark shoes repeat some of the darker details in the print and keep the outfit balanced. This would be perfect for dinner, church, a shower or any occasion when you want to look a little extra special.

I got this top at Old Navy, but I can’t find anything similar right now.

12. Keep It Relaxed With a Knotted Top

An oversized taupe top gives the pants a comfortable, casual feel. However, the knot at the front keeps all that extra fabric from overwhelming the figure.

Taupe and cream create a low-contrast neutral combination that looks effortless. Add flat sandals and you have an outfit that is comfortable enough for home but still polished enough to wear out.

13. Make Them Sporty With a Deep Teal Hoodie

Cream pants can even work with athleisure pieces. This deep teal hoodie gives the outfit a sporty look, while the rich color makes it especially flattering for a Deep Autumn.

The casual shoes reinforce the relaxed feel. It is a great example of how the same pants can move from business casual to weekend wear simply by changing the top and footwear.

14. Add a Cinnamon Waffle-Knit Top

The texture of this cinnamon-brown top adds visual interest without requiring a print. The varying of textures with the crochet inlay adds visual interest while asymmetrically tucking it in provides waist definition and keeps the proportion balanced with the wider leg of the pants.

Then there are the leopard sneakers. They introduce a little pattern and personality while still coordinating with the warm neutral color scheme.

15. Mix In a Neutral Leopard Print

This taupe-and-brown leopard top proves that a print can still function almost like a neutral. It adds pattern, but the muted color palette keeps the outfit easy to wear.

Casual sneakers dress the cream pants down and make the entire outfit practical for everyday life. Cute, comfortable and easy—what more could you ask for?

16. Wear Them With a Striped Tie-Front Blouse

The rust and cream stripes in this blouse coordinate naturally with the pants. The tie-front detail defines the waist while also adding a relaxed, slightly playful element.

Because the blouse includes cream in the print, the entire outfit feels cohesive. This is an easy trick to use when styling light pants: choose a print that repeats the color of the pants somewhere in its design.

17. Create a Classic Look With a Dark Fitted Boat Neck

A fitted navy or dark-neutral boat neck gives the cream pants a timeless, almost preppy quality. The slim belt and dark pumps reinforce the clean, classic lines.

This outfit is simple, but simple does not have to mean boring. The contrast between the dark top and light pants makes it look sharp and polished.

18. Add a Coral Blouse

Coral gives the cream pants a bright, warm-weather appearance without creating the harsh contrast that you might get from wearing coral with optic white.

The asymmetrical or partially tucked hem keeps the blouse from looking too boxy. Add warm brown sandals and you have an easy outfit for work, lunch or a casual event.

19. Try an Olive Striped Button-Up

Olive is another natural companion for cream. The vertical stripes visually lengthen the upper body, while the brown belt adds waist definition and repeats the earthy warmth of the shoes.

Button-up shirts are also extremely versatile. Wear this one tucked for a polished appearance, tied at the waist for a casual look or open over a tank as a lightweight layer.

20. Add a Graphic T-Shirt

A graphic tee is one of the easiest ways to make cream pants feel less serious. This heart-print tee incorporates several warm, muted shades that coordinate beautifully with an Autumn wardrobe.

Knotting the shirt creates shape and makes the outfit feel styled rather than simply thrown together. Brown sandals complete the casual look.

21. Keep It Simple With a Blue T-Shirt

Sometimes the simplest outfits are the ones we wear the most. A soft blue T-shirt, cream pants and light sneakers create an easy uniform for busy days.

The small front tuck adds just enough waist definition. You could also add a belt, cardigan, denim jacket or statement necklace when you want a little more visual interest.

22. Pair Them With Dusty Rose

Dusty rose adds warmth and softness to the cream pants. Because both colors are muted, they create a gentle, low-contrast outfit that is easy on the eye. The best part about this top is the back. See the cute detail.

The twist or tuck at the hem adds shape, while the cream shoes extend the light color down the leg. This helps create one long, uninterrupted line.

23. Go Completely Monochromatic

This outfit shows how dressy cream pants can become. Pairing them with a fitted cream top, a statement belt and pointed-toe heels creates a polished monochromatic look.

The belt breaks up the light color and emphasizes the waist. Meanwhile, the pointed toe adds length and refinement. This would be perfect for a dressier work environment, church or a special event.

24. Belt a Feminine Rust Blouse

The flutter sleeves on this rust blouse add softness and movement. Adding a wide cream belt defines the waist and connects the blouse visually to the pants.

The woven shoes introduce another texture while remaining within the cream color family. The result is warm, feminine and coordinated without looking overly matched.

25. Finish With an Olive Utility Shirt

Finally, an olive button-up brings us right back to one of the most useful colors in a Deep Autumn wardrobe. Using a creative tucking technique like this one, gives a unique look with an ordinary blouse.

The brown belt and shoes repeat the warmth of the olive top. This outfit feels relaxed, classic and just a little bit rugged—the perfect everyday combination.
